The visionary creative minds behind the underground cult classic Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space are returning with a sprawling, psychedelic cyber-noir sequel. The production committee for Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark dropped an official full-length trailer and striking key visual, confirming an ambitious simultaneous theatrical launch across Japan and the United States on January 22.
Helmed by the enigmatic artistic duo known as t.o.L—comprising creators K. and kuno—the film picks up the existential narrative thread of its chain-smoking feline anti-heroine. Set against the neon-drenched backdrop of Cat Tokyo in the year 2030, Tamala teams up with her detective companion Michelangelo to investigate a bizarre series of vanishings across Cat Japan. Their inquiry exposes an intricate web connecting ancient occult prophecies, cosmic anomalies, and a sinister corporate entity known as Catty & Co.
A Unique Cyber-Noir Vision
Distributor Deaf Crocodile characterizes the project as a kaleidoscopic fusion of surreal satire and post-internet paranoia. Drawing thematic inspiration from the works of Philip K. Dick, David Lynch, and Thomas Pynchon, alongside the deceptive cuteness of Hello Kitty, the feature blends high-concept art house sensibilities with anarchic punk rock subversion.
