Following the conclusion of Orient in October 2024, celebrated manga author Shinobu Ohtaka is preparing her next major serialized project. Officially announced via Kodansha's Magazine Pocket platform, Ohtaka will launch a brand-new series titled Geek Crown (Geek and Crown) on October 27.
Geek Crown steps away from the traditional shonen coming-of-age themes of Ohtaka's previous works, positioning itself as a high-stakes military fantasy. The central narrative revolves around a tense royal succession conflict where the protagonist must navigate political intrigue to expose a high-ranking officer committing treason from within the military ranks.
Ohtaka remains one of modern fantasy manga's most recognizable names, having created Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, which ran in Shounen Sunday from 2009 to 2017 and earned the prestigious 59th Shogakukan Manga Award. The franchise expanded into the prequel Magi: The Adventures of Sinbad and received two widely acclaimed anime adaptations produced by studio A-1 Pictures. With Geek Crown moving to a digital-first platform, readers can expect a refined focus on serial narrative pacing and tactical political drama.
