Credit research company Tokyo Shoko Research (TSR) reported on Thursday that game development company Odd Number and two affiliated companies filed for bankruptcy in the Tokyo District Court on August 5. Odd Number accumulated approximately 10,320,780,000 yen (about US$64.71 million) in liabilities as of December 2024.
Odd Number is widely known as the developer behind 'Link! Like! Love Live!', the smartphone application tied to the 'Love Live! Hasu no Sora Jōgakuin School Idol Club' virtual school idol project. The app launched in April 2023 and officially ended service on June 30. The Hasu no Sora project is unique within the broader Love Live! franchise for featuring a real-time calendar storyline where characters progressed, graduated, and exited the main plot in tandem with their real-life voice actresses.
According to TSR, maintaining the game's high operating costs resulted in massive financial strain, leading to a loss of over 5.6 billion yen by December 2023 and total debts exceeding 6.8 billion yen at the time. Despite these hurdles, operations continued until business partners secured provisional attachments on the company's headquarters between December 2025 and March 2026.
Despite the game's closure, the Hasu no Sora franchise continues to expand through other media. The Bloom Garden Party 3D anime film premiered in Japanese theaters on May 8, a television anime series is slated to premiere in January 2027, and an ongoing manga runs in Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine.
