Netflix confirmed on Wednesday that it will stream Mononoke The Movie: Chapter III – The Curse of the Serpent (Gekijōban Mononoke Dai-San-Shō: Hebigami), the third installment in the Mononoke franchise's film trilogy, on September 29.
The film originally opened in Japan on May 29. The trilogy began with Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain in July 2024, followed by Mononoke the Movie Trilogy: Chapter 2: The Ashes of Rage in March 2025. Netflix streams the first two films.
In early production phases, Twin Engine recast the iconic protagonist the Medicine Seller, replacing Takahiro Sakurai with Hiroshi Kamiya following tabloid reports regarding Sakurai's personal life. However, the third film featured a surprise cameo appearance by Sakurai as the original Medicine Seller character, sparking controversy and leading planning producer Kōji Yamamoto to issue a public apology and announce his retirement.
The franchise is also planning a brand new project featuring a third Medicine Seller character named "Ken no Tsurugi," voiced by actor Hirofumi Araki, who portrayed the character in recent Mononoke stage plays.
