After years of silence following its abrupt postponement in September 2023, the four-episode anniversary project for NARUTO has finally resurfaced with an unexpected creative direction. Revealed during the franchise presentation at New York Comic Con, the upcoming miniseries is an official crossover with Koji Kiriyama's classic martial arts manga NINKU.
The production originally was scheduled to broadcast on TV Tokyo to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the anime adaptation before being pulled from broadcast schedules to allow the animation team additional polish. The narrative premise transports a young Naruto Uzumaki into the world of NINKU while executing an assignment, bringing him face-to-face with former imperial warrior Fusuke.
A Pierrot Heritage Link
While NINKU remains relatively niche for modern international viewers compared to Masashi Kishimoto's global blockbuster, the crossover unites two landmark franchises bound by shared historical lineage at Studio Pierrot. Key points connecting the productions include:
- Shared Lineage: NINKU ran in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1993 before receiving a 55-episode television adaptation by Studio Pierrot between 1995 and 1996 under director Noriyuki Abe.
- Visual Blueprint: Renowned animator Tetsuya Nishio served as character designer for both NINKU and later defined the aesthetic of the original NARUTO television run.
- Cast Reunion: Original voice actors Junko Takeuchi and Noriaki Sugiyama headlined the New York Comic Con reveal event.
By blending the ninjutsu styles of the Hidden Leaf with the hybrid martial arts of the Ninku Corps, Studio Pierrot appears intent on delivering a nostalgic celebration of Jump history tailored for veteran sakuga enthusiasts and longtime franchise followers alike.
