Original franchise creator Masashi Kishimoto is returning to the drawing board for a brand-new manga entry titled Naruto: Shadow Rising. The project was officially announced during a dedicated stage panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, surprising attendees alongside legacy franchise voice cast members Junko Takeuchi (Naruto Uzumaki) and Noriaki Sugiyama (Sasuke Uchiha).
Unlike the ongoing continuation Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, which is illustrated by artist Mikio Ikemoto following Kishimoto's supervisory oversight, this production places Kishimoto directly back into the primary illustrator chair. The panel also addressed the long-delayed four-episode franchise anniversary broadcast, confirming that the forthcoming anime special serves as a collaborative crossover project with Studio Pierrot classic NINKU.
A Broadening Ninja Universe
The announcement arrives amid an extensive renaissance for the property across multiple entertainment sectors. Beyond the serialized page, the franchise continues to branch out across global media channels:
- Hollywood Adaptation: Live-action feature film helmed by director Destin Daniel Cretton, which recently commenced worldwide casting calls for Team 7.
- Tabletop Gaming: An international release for the newly engineered Naruto Card Game trading card system scheduled for 2027.
- Stage Productions: A non-verbal theatrical live showcase slated to debut at Kyoto's Minamiza Theater in early 2027.
First launched in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in September 1999, the foundational 72-volume narrative established an indelible legacy across global pop culture. With Kishimoto taking up pen and ink directly for Naruto: Shadow Rising, anticipation remains centered on where this new chapter fits within ninja history.
