During her seventh appearance at the French convention Japan Expo Paris, legendary singer-songwriter Mika Kobayashi sat down for an exclusive conversation about her remarkable journey through the anime music industry. Known for her unforgettable vocal performances on soundtracks composed by Hiroyuki Sawano—including Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill, and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress—Kobayashi shared insights into her creative process, international touring, and managing her independent label.
Reflecting on her iconic work in Attack on Titan, Kobayashi discussed the unique challenge of channeling the mindset of a titan during recording sessions. When asked about working alongside composer Hiroyuki Sawano on tracks featuring foreign languages, she explained that German was chosen for "Bauklotze" to evoke a mysterious, timeless atmosphere that transcends linguistic barriers. Similarly, recording the English lyrics for Kill la Kill's energetic anthem "Before my body is dry" allowed the raw emotional weight of Ryuko and Senketsu's goals to resonate naturally with fans worldwide.
The Independent Path and Global Connection
Operating entirely outside major corporate structures through her personal record label, 'miccabose', has given Kobayashi complete creative freedom over her artistic output. Rather than answering to external executive decisions, she maintains total authority over her musical direction—a philosophy that mirrors her intense live performances alongside the samurai artist troupe KAMUI.
Discussing her extensive international touring experience, Kobayashi noted that overseas audiences offer a remarkably direct and expressive reaction to live music. Looking ahead, the vocalist continues to expand her cultural reach, with upcoming international performances scheduled at Japan Weekend Bilbao in Spain this October and her debut concert in Lima, Peru, on November 14.
