Sixteen years after the conclusion of one of modern historical manga's most ambitious maritime epics, veteran creator Masatoshi Kihara is officially steering back into uncharted waters. The legendary marine fantasy Kaikouki returns to the pages of Kodansha’s Monthly Shonen Magazine with a brand-new serialization titled Kaikouki Juden Hajime (Kaikouki Prequel: Genesis), taking readers back to the formative years of its iconic protagonist.
New Horizons
The original Kaikouki ran from March 1998 to August 2010, cementing itself as a towering achievement in serialized shonen storytelling with over 17 million copies in circulation. Spanning across vast oceans and continental empires, the series captured readers with its intricate political machinations, naval warfare, and deep world-building. Now, the new prequel explores an untold chapter in the life of Fan Gamma Bizen, a member of the Sea Tribe of the Eighth Ship, focusing on his trials across a foreign continent long before he inherited the legendary Nihonto blade.
The first chapter is currently available for readers to explore via Comic Days, offering both nostalgic veterans and curious newcomers an immediate gateway back into Kihara’s meticulous universe.
Legacy & Release
Alongside the magazine’s return to shelves, Kodansha has announced a major scheduling shift for its Monthly Shonen Magazine imprint: starting in November, comic volume releases will permanently move to the sixth day of each month, aligning with the parent magazine's publication schedule. The debut collected volume of Kaikouki Juden Hajime is slated for release on November 6, priced at 792 yen, with pre-orders already open across major Japanese retailers.
