Renowned scenario writer and game developer Kotaro Uchikoshi has officially stepped into a new chapter of his career. Known worldwide for engineering mind-bending narratives in the Zero Escape trilogy and AI: The Somnium Files, Uchikoshi revealed that he quietly established a brand-new independent studio named Crash Keys in March 2025.
Headquartered in Tokyo's Shibuya district—sharing a building with World's End Club publisher IzanagiGames—Crash Keys specializes in video game design, direction, and narrative architecture. Alongside Uchikoshi as CEO and director, the boutique studio features notable industry talent including Akira Mine and scriptwriter Muri Sasaki, both of whom have deep ties to contemporary visual novel and adventure game design.
The public unveiling of Crash Keys arrived under unexpected circumstances. Uchikoshi originally intended to reveal the studio alongside a major new title he and his team had spent roughly a year and a half developing. However, after that project was abruptly canceled, the veteran creator adjusted his plans, pushing out a cryptic website complete with Easter eggs and subtle narrative cyphers that long-time fans of his work immediately began decoding.
Beyond the core team members, the studio's official portal contains enigmatic placeholders like "HLPUL UFHLK" and "CESTN RTKSH," utilizing cypher techniques heavily featured in the Zero Escape franchise. Additional phrases such as "RHIZOME-9" and "MEMENTO MORI, IF THE NIN"E"TH LION ATE THE SUN" point directly to deep lore motifs from Virtue's Last Reward, signaling that Uchikoshi's signature penchant for interactive puzzles remains alive and well.
