Korean content enterprise RIDI has officially announced the impending closure of Kanta, its short-form live-action streaming platform operating in the Japanese market. The decision forms part of a broader corporate restructuring initiative aimed at consolidating resources around core digital publishing verticals.
Initially launched in Japan in July 2025, Kanta specialized in bite-sized, vertical live-action dramas adapted from Korean intellectual properties. Despite entering the burgeoning micro-drama sector, leadership opted to shutter the service to realign investments toward global fan community ecosystems centered on digital comics, webtoons, and web novels.
Strategic Pivot
Reflecting on the operational shift, RIDI confirmed that insights, user metrics, and production methodologies gathered during Kanta's brief run will not go to waste. Instead, the firm intends to channel this accumulated know-how into expanding its core webnovel and webtoon intellectual properties while investigating alternative commercial applications for existing media assets.
