The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced that legendary composer Joe Hisaishi will serve as its Composer-in-Residence, establishing a historic five-year artistic partnership with the orchestra starting in the 2027/28 season and extending through 2031/32. The collaboration marks a significant crossover between iconic Japanese symphonic film scoring and elite American orchestral institutions.
Under this landmark arrangement, Hisaishi will craft original symphonic compositions created specifically for the LA Phil. His residency will incorporate regular performances across iconic Southern California venues, including the Hollywood Bowl, The Ford, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Beyond live orchestral programs, the five-year commitment encompasses recording projects as well as educational and community outreach initiatives launched alongside the Joe Hisaishi Foundation.
A Legacy of Cinematic Soundtracks
Hisaishi’s indelible musical imprint has defined anime cinema for over four decades. As Hayao Miyazaki's primary musical collaborator since 1984's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Hisaishi created the iconic scores for beloved classics such as My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away. His orchestral repertoire also spans Isao Takahata's poignant final masterpiece, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, alongside serving as executive producer for the acclaimed West End stage adaptation of My Neighbor Totoro in London.
Recognized globally for bridging orchestral traditions with cinematic storytelling, Hisaishi was awarded Japan's prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2023, following the Medal of Honor in 2010 and six Japan Academy Film Prizes for Best Music.
