Yuka Ōshima's poignant manga Haru to Gen ~70-sai, Hajimete Kosodate~ (Haru and Gen: Raising a Child for the First Time at 70) is officially making the transition to television. A short-format anime adaptation has been scheduled to premiere this coming January on the TV Kanagawa (tvk) broadcast channel, bringing a touching intergenerational narrative to screens.
The source material follows Gen, an estranged 70-year-old man who was long separated from his wife and daughter following a past divorce. Following his daughter's tragic passing, Gen is unexpectedly entrusted with the care of his three-year-old granddaughter, Haru. Confronting the heavy weight of his past familial neglect, Gen must navigate the profound trials, tribulations, and unexpected joys of raising a young child from scratch.
Production Team and Origins
The animated adaptation is being helmed by director Kōdai Satō at IMAGICA Infos and Imageworks Studio, working in close collaboration with Studio Nanahoshi. The creative staff also features Taeko Miura directing the sound, Maki Takuma managing sound effects, and bermei.inazawa composing the musical score. RD is handling sound production, while Kazuya Takahashi serves as executive producer.
Creator Yuka Ōshima initially launched the manga back in December 2022 on Kadokawa's TATESC Comic vertical-scrolling, full-color webcomic label. Kadokawa subsequently published the series' first compiled book volume in March 2024, cementing its transition into a recognized modern title.
