South Korean animation house LOCUS Animation Studio has announced that Guardians of the Video Game, a theatrical animated feature based on the popular webtoon by Gasfard, will debut in South Korean cinemas in October. Alongside the premiere window, the studio shared a debut poster and an official trailer highlighting its hybrid 3D and retro pixel-art art direction.
Behind the 8-Bit Screen
The story follows Patch, an elite agent tasked with engineering and maintaining internal game environments behind the scenes. When corporate politics derail his career, Patch is demoted to the classic retro sector and deployed inside the aging 8-bit title Legend of the Dragon Sword to prevent the game from being decommissioned.
Within the wires and pixels of your favorite video game lies an unsuspecting protector. Patch is the top guardi-agent at the Guardians of the Video Game Corporation, working hard to keep games running at all costs. That is, until his promotion is ruined by office politics and he's assigned to the obsolete Classic Games department. Nevertheless, Patch is determined to fulfill his responsibilities as a guardian.
Originally serialized between 2014 and 2021, Gasfard's original webcomic gathered over 340 million reads worldwide. LOCUS Animation Studio—previously recognized for producing Red Shoes and The Priest—handles production for the feature adaptation. International readers can access the official digital release through WEBTOON.
