October 10 has been officially designated as Gintama Day by the Japan Anniversary Association, falling concurrently with the birthday of the franchise's iconic protagonist, Gintoki Sakata. The official recognition was revealed during a special stage event celebrating the release of the reanimated film Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames Arc.
Voice actors Tomokazu Sugita, Daisuke Sakaguchi, and Rie Kugimiya took the stage alongside former editor Kohei Onishi and producer Hiromitsu Higuchi. Sugita, who voices Gintoki, accepted the official certificate on behalf of the production. Reflecting on the milestone, Sugita expressed his gratitude and joked about hoping the date might eventually be marked on calendars nationwide.
Reflections on Two Decades of Chaos
The celebratory gathering also looked back on the sprawling twenty-year history of Hideaki Sorachi's legendary creation. Sorachi shared a characteristic humor-filled message recalling his initial expectations when the anime adaptation first began production.
Looking back now, I honestly thought it was going to flop. I thought it would be difficult to recreate Gintama’s particular style in anime, and even if they managed it, I figured there wouldn’t be many people who would understand it.

Sorachi added that he never anticipated the anime adaptation would amplify his manga royalties to such a degree, thanking the staff and fans for sustaining the franchise far beyond his original expectations. He also reminisced about the initial voice casting process, noting that Shinpachi and Kagura were secured immediately, while Gintoki required careful deliberation before selecting Sugita.
The Enduring Legacy
Running in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2018, Gintama grew from an unconventional samurai comedy into a massive multimedia phenomenon spanning 367 episodes, numerous theatrical features, OVAs, and video games. The television adaptation was helmed by Sunrise before Bandai Namco Pictures took over for later seasons, culminating in the box office hit Gintama: The Very Final.
As the event concluded, Sugita addressed the gathered fans regarding the franchise's unexpected longevity, urging the community to keep expressing their love for the series so that its chaotic yet beloved spirit can continue to thrive.
