Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially confirmed that the legendary racing franchise is returning to screens. The brand-new anime short titled Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA is scheduled to screen in Japanese theaters starting February 19, 2027. This high-speed project serves as a direct sequel to the 1998 OVA series Future GPX Cyber Formula Sin, bringing back classic characters and high-octane racing action.
Alongside the brand-new short, screenings will feature an HD remastered movie edition of the 1996 compilation OVA Future GPX Cyber Formula: Early Days Renewal. Series director Mitsuo Fukuda is steering the project at Sunrise, emphasizing a commitment to pure hand-drawn animation without relying on computer-generated imagery. Character designer Hirokazu Hisayuki and chief mechanical animation director Satoshi Shigeta collaborated on promotional key visuals, while renowned mechanical designer Shōji Kawamori contributed the stunning new machine concept art.
The production boasts a stellar reunion of veteran talent and iconic voice actors. Jun-ichi Kanemaru returns as protagonist Hayato Kazami, joined by Kotono Mitsuishi as Asuka Sugo, Toshihiko Seki as Bleed Kaga, Yuri Amano as Kyōko Aoi, and Shūichi Ikeda as Kyoshiro Nagumo. Fans can also look forward to brand-new mechanical designs, including the newly unveiled 'Hō・Ōga AA-1' machine alongside the previously showcased 'Zenith Asurada AKF-S0/G'.
Originally launched as a television series by Sunrise in 1991, Future GPX Cyber Formula established a devoted following through its unique blend of intense motorsport competition and advanced artificial intelligence co-pilots like Asurada. The franchise expanded across multiple critically acclaimed OVA chapters throughout the 1990s. Beyond the upcoming theatrical screenings, franchise development continues with an authorized new video game project titled Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral, featuring original narrative supervision by director Mitsuo Fukuda.
