Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix are expanding their ongoing creative partnership into the dark fantasy realms of Sanctuary. During the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12, leadership officially confirmed that a brand-new animated television series set in the universe of Diablo is currently in production.
The announcement arrives as part of milestone celebrations marking the franchise's 30th anniversary, following the release of the original action role-playing game in 1996. Over the past three decades, the property has expanded across multiple mainline installments, drawing a global player base exceeding 130 million people.
Expanding Sanctuary
While specific plot details, production studios, and release windows remain under wraps, Blizzard's official event recap confirmed that creative teams are actively shaping the episodic narrative. The adaptation will draw from the rich lore of Sanctuary, a grim world perpetually caught in the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
The television project was revealed alongside major updates for the interactive gaming side of the franchise. Alongside ongoing expansions for Diablo IV, developers surprised attendees by unveiling Diablo V, slated for a Spring 2029 release. The upcoming sequel posits a bleak premise where the Lord of Terror has already claimed victory and the champions of the world lie defeated, setting up a grim narrative landscape that the forthcoming animated adaptation may draw thematic inspiration from as production advances.
