Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it has acquired most of the worldwide distribution rights to Makoto Shinkai's new feature film. The distribution rights exclude almost all of Asia, but do include India. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures will co-distribute the film.
Crunchyroll did not reveal details about Shinkai's new film, including its title. Shinkai stated on social media in November 2025 that he has been working on a "new film" alongside "dependable companions," adding that he could not yet formally announce the work.
Shinkai's Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) film opened in Japan at #1 in November 2022. The film opened in North America in April 2023. Crunchyroll screened the film in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. Suzume ranked at #1 on its opening day on many countries' box office charts, earned over US$10 million in the U.S., and finished its run globally with a current worldwide gross of US$221,184,739 according to Box Office Mojo. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the film.
