Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu (Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island), the first anime film adaptation of Nagano's Chiikawa manga, rose from #2 to #1 in its third weekend. The film sold 1.147 million tickets and earned 1,698,950,000 yen (about US$10.65 million) from Friday to Sunday, bringing its cumulative total to 6,777,844,100 yen (about US$42.50 million). The film opened on July 24 and originally ranked at #1 for its opening weekend. Based on the manga's popular "Siren Arc" or "Island Arc" posted on X from March to November 2023, the story follows Chiikawa, Hachiware, and a suspicious rabbit as they accept a tempting invitation to a mysterious island, joined reluctantly by Rakko.
Nagano is credited for the original story and script, with Kei Oikawa directing the film at Cygames Pictures under Nagano's supervision. QTORY inc. managed the production, and TOHO distributed the film. Makoto Tanaka, who voices Hachiware, performed the opening theme song "Kutsuzure" (Shoe Sore) with lyrics written by Nagano. Meanwhile, Momoka Terasawa and Sayumi Suzushiro joined the cast as islanders Hitoha and Futaba.
In other box office news, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Kikikaikai! Ora no Yōkai Bake-shon, the 33rd 2D anime film in the Crayon Shin-chan series, dropped from #3 to #6 in its second weekend, earning 288,991,400 yen (about US$1.81 million) over the weekend for a cumulative total of 1,173,580,950 yen (about US$7.35 million). Directed by Masaki Watanabe at Shin-Ei Animation, the film sends the Nohara family to Akita where they get pulled into a mysterious yōkai realm.
The fifth live-action film based on Yasuhisa Hara's Kingdom manga, titled Kingdom: Tamashii no Kessen, dropped from #5 to #7 in its fourth weekend, grossing 309,459,900 yen (about US$1.94 million) and reaching a cumulative total of 4,920,141,100 yen (about US$30.85 million). Additionally, the live-action film adaptation of Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yūsuke Nomura's BLUE LOCK soccer manga debuted at #8 in its opening weekend, earning 277,648,800 yen (about US$1.74 million) in its first three days after opening on August 7.
