Japanese pop-rock outfit I Don't Like Mondays. have established a firm international presence since performing "PAINT", the 24th opening theme for the anime ONE PIECE in 2022. Marking their first anime tie-in in roughly four and a half years, their latest single "Groooovy" serves as the ending theme for the television anime adaptation of BLACK TORCH. Blending a bittersweet atmosphere with smooth city-pop sensibilities, the track captures the quiet everyday moments of the series' cast. In a recent interview, the band opened up about their creative process behind translating character routines into music.
Alongside the single, the group released their ambitious 18-track studio album FRIDAY. Featuring a wide array of high-profile collaborations, the project represents a complete artistic renewal following their tenth anniversary. The band reflected on the insights gained from overseas live performances, unexpected tour mishaps, and the club-inspired night atmosphere woven throughout their latest musical chapter.
Crafting Everyday Resonance
Discussing the transition from writing an opening theme to an ending theme, vocalist YU noted that while "PAINT" required a high-energy, high-anticipation feel fitting for ONE PIECE, an ending theme calls for a different approach. "Because it's an ending, we wanted something that allows listeners to linger in the afterglow once the episode concludes," YU explained. Drummer SHUKI added that the production team requested an intro and a focus on the characters' daily lives rather than direct combat scenes, allowing the band to lean into their signature sound.
