Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially unveiled the Japanese voice cast for its upcoming animated theatrical feature, Billy to Maho no Hajimari. Rising actor Mei Hata will voice the central heroine, Billy Doe, marking her debut in a Disney animated feature ahead of the film's nationwide theatrical release on December 4.
The feature introduces Disney's first contemporary high school protagonist, following Billy as she struggles to fit into conventional expectations before discovering latent magical powers. Transported into the hidden kingdom of Hex, Billy becomes a marked fugitive under the reigning queen when she demonstrates the unprecedented ability to fly in a land where aerial magic is thought to be impossible.
A Modern Heroine
Hata secured the title role following an audition process overseen directly by Disney's international creative supervisors. Dubbing director Yuka Sasaki commended Hata's quick adjustments during studio recording, specifically noting her balance of mischievous teenage defiance and emotional vulnerability.
During the promotional stage showcase in Tokyo, Hata reflected on the psychological parallels between herself and the protagonist, pointing out how Billy's external bravery masks a relatable teenage self-doubt when confronting high expectations.
The fantasy adventure arrives in Japanese cinemas on December 4, supported by full theatrical localization.
