The organizers behind AnimeJapan have officially announced the submission window for the AnimeJapan New Creator Awards 2027. Running from October 1 until February 6, 2027, the international competition returns for its second consecutive year with the core mission of discovering and nurturing emerging animation talent across educational institutions in Japan.
Prizes and Global Distribution
Aspiring filmmakers enrolled in Japanese educational programs are invited to submit short animation films lasting approximately 15 minutes or less, inclusive of opening and ending credits. Winning entries will secure substantial recognition alongside worldwide distribution through prominent domestic and international streaming partners, offering an unprecedented launchpad for upcoming directors and animators.
The competition's prize pool features significant backing:
- Grand Prix: One million yen (approximately $6,419 USD).
- Crunchyroll Award: A dedicated one-million-yen scholarship sponsored by Crunchyroll.
- Category Awards: Four separate 300,000-yen prizes (around $1,925 USD) recognizing excellence in technical application, direction, character design, and art.
Furthermore, the recipient of the AnimeJapan Special Award will earn an invaluable opportunity to exhibit their short film at major anime conventions worldwide, complemented by a specialized seminar hosted by veteran creators at the winner's home institution.
Historic Relocation to Osaka
The awards ceremony will take place during the public exhibition days of AnimeJapan 2027, scheduled for March 27 or 28. Marking a major turning point in the convention's history, the entire event will relocate from Tokyo Big Sight to the Intex Osaka convention center, running from March 26 to 28. This represents the first time the convention leaves Tokyo, a venue shift that will extend into 2028 following a record-breaking 2026 attendance of 156,000 visitors.
