The indie manga landscape continues to gain prestigious recognition in Western publishing circles. The 2026 Ignatz Awards has officially nominated Akino Kondoh’s acclaimed manga collection Box Garden Beetle (Hako Niwa Mushi) in the highly competitive Outstanding Collection category.

Publisher Glacier Bay Books first introduced Western readers to Kondoh’s surreal, evocative worlds following an initial Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Originally published in Japan by Seirinkogeisha back in 2004, the collection showcases Kondoh's distinctive visual style, characterized by intricate stippling, dreamlike childhood recollections, and poetic narrative structures.

This nomination further underscores Glacier Bay Books' vital role in bringing avant-garde and alternative Japanese comics to international audiences.
The Ignatz Legacy
Named after the brick-throwing mouse in George Herriman’s foundational newspaper comic Krazy Kat, the Ignatz Awards celebrate exceptional achievements in independent comics and cartooning. Nominees are chosen annually by a specialized jury of cartoonists, with final winners determined by attendees of the Small Press Expo.
This nod places Kondoh alongside other celebrated alternative manga translations. Previously, Glacier Bay Books took home the Outstanding Anthology award for Glaeolia 2 in 2021, and Nazuna Saitō’s short story collection Offshore Lightning earned an Outstanding Collection nomination in 2024.
