Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine (Square Enix) announced the death of Youko Umezu, the artist behind the Vermeil in Gold manga. In a press release posted on their X account, the magazine stated that an ischemic stroke caused Umezu-sensei’s death on July 7th. Square Enix also announced that the Vermeil in Gold manga ended its serialization with the chapter in their June 12th issue. The series’ editor will reveal the details regarding the manga’s uncollected chapter in the future. A private funeral has already been held for Umezu-sensei.

Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine serialized Kinsou no Vermeil: Gakeppuchi Majutsushi wa Saikyou no Yakusai to Mahou Sekai wo Tsukisusumu from August 10th, 2018, to June 12th, 2026. Kouta Amana wrote the manga while Youko Umezu illustrated it. Square Enix compiled the manga’s individual chapters into eleven volumes. The Manga UP! Global website and Comikey both publish the series in English. Staple Entertainment adapted the manga into a summer 2022 TV anime. Takashi Naoya directed the series, which features scripts by Tatsuya Takahashi and character design by Kiyoshi Tateishi. HIDIVE streams the anime’s subbed and dubbed versions in the US and other select territories.
Vermeil in Gold’s lead voice cast includes Maaya Uchida as Vermeil, Yuuya Hirose as Alto Goldfilled, and Wakana Kuramochi as Lilia Kudelfaate. The series follows Alto Goldfilled, a hard-working student at the Ortigia Academy of Magic, who accidentally summons a powerful demon named Vermeil from a grimoire.
