The summer broadcast of the Yani Neko anime reached its penultimate broadcast with Episode 11, titled "Nyas in Kyoto," bringing the chaotic apartment residents out of their usual habitat and straight into Japan's ancient capital. Directed by Taku Kimura at Bibury Animation Studio, the episode delivered unexpected production choices that caught both viewers and the cast entirely off guard.
Following a cold open featuring Shizue, expectations were subverted immediately when the opening sequence played the ending theme "Enmuto Blue" by Necry Talkie instead of Wasurenaneteyo's usual opening track "Namnone." The musical chair arrangement extended to the closing credits, where Wasurenaneteyo performed the cover version normally expected elsewhere. Apartment landlord Toru Inada voiced his delight on social media over the playful direction, praising the creative team's knack for unannounced structural twists.
Kyoto Expedition and the Deer King
The plot follows the younger sister Imako on a school trip to Kyoto, coinciding with manga artist Tatsuro's research trip funded by the editorial department. Loaded into a newly purchased financed car, the eclectic group of beast-folk embark on a sightseeing tour filled with misfortune, including multiple unlucky fortunes and a bizarre historical exhibition featuring censored bamboo spears.
The highlight of the excursion arrived in a public park when the protagonist encountered a formidable local resident. Voiced by legendary voice actor Ryusei Nakao—celebrated globally for iconic villain roles including Frieza in Dragonball Z and Baikinman in Anpanman—the majestic Deer King confronted the greedy feline over deer crackers with supreme, regal authority.
Nakao's authoritative performance instantly set social media ablaze, with fans drawing amusing parallels between the monarchical deer and interstellar tyrants despite the poetic melancholy of the dialogue. Naturally, the encounter concluded with the series' signature subversive humor as the feline protagonist offered the majestic animal a cigarette, prompting immediate disclaimer text warning viewers against replicating the action with real wildlife.
Production Pedigree and Finale Preparations
Based on the manga by Nyanyan Factory serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine, the series continues to push boundaries under the adaptation framework supervised by writer Takashi Aoshima and character designer Tsutomu Matsuura. Director Taku Kimura later noted that unscripted broadcast versions, including special streaming cuts such as the "Evil Dragon Unsealed Edition," contain deliberate alterations tailored for specific broadcast platforms.
With only one installment remaining before the series concludes its television run, the eccentric neighborhood comedy has cemented its reputation for unpredictable weekly surprises. Fans can catch the final broadcast across Tokyo MX, BS11, and AT-X, alongside streaming platforms including Netflix.
