Toei Video has formally launched celebrations for the milestone 40th anniversary of its historic direct-to-video animation banner, Toei V-Anime, unveiling a dedicated commemorative project logo designed to spearhead upcoming retrospectives and announcements.
Decades of Direct-to-Video Heritage
Originating during the explosive rise of the Original Video Animation (OVA) market in the mid-1980s, the Toei V-Anime label represented a fundamental shift in how Japanese animation studios targeted mature audiences and experimental concepts away from traditional television constraints. The initiative enabled legendary animators and directors to bypass broadcast censorship, fostering ambitious storytelling across sci-fi, dark fantasy, and genre-defying action franchises.
The 40th-anniversary initiative will celebrate four decades of foundational home-entertainment history, spotlighting influential classic releases while laying the groundwork for digital remasters, archival showcases, and specialized celebratory content in the months ahead.
