San-X's beloved multimedia franchise Sumikko Gurashi is gearing up for a monumental milestone, marking its 15th anniversary in 2027. To celebrate this significant occasion, producers have officially announced that the franchise's theatrical wing will return with the fifth installment in its critically acclaimed anime film series, slated for a nationwide premiere in 2027. Accompanying this major reveal, series creator Yuri Yokomiso has shared an exclusive celebratory illustration.
Since the debut of 2019's breakout hit Sumikko Gurashi: The Movie - The Unexpected Picture Book and the Secret Child, the theatrical adaptations have charmed audiences far beyond the franchise's original demographic. Known for subverting expectations with unexpectedly poignant and emotional narratives centered on neuroses-ridden, cozy corner-dwelling characters like Shirokuma, Penguin?, Tonkatsu, Neko, and Tokage, the series has collectively surpassed 3.5 million ticket admissions in Japanese box offices.
The Final Main Character Takes Center Stage
Following a tradition where each successive feature highlights a specific member of the ensemble, the fifth film will focus squarely on Neko, the shyest of the group. In Yokomiso's newly revealed commemorative art, Neko stands center-stage, blushing gently while encouraged by its loyal companion, Zassou. Neko cradles the number five, which currently remains pristine and blank, hinting at the emotional journey awaiting fans when the feature opens.
Limited Anniversary Screenings
Prior to the franchise's grand 2027 milestone, fans will have a chance to revisit the magical world on the big screen. Beginning October 31, the franchise will host a special limited anniversary theatrical run of the second film, Sumikko Gurashi: The Movie - A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night. Playing across 82 theaters nationwide for a four-day engagement through November 3, the screenings will feature brand-new animated footage attached after the credits.
Attendees at these special retrospective screenings will also receive an exclusive commemorative postcard featuring newly drawn art depicting the Sumikkos reuniting with the magical visitors from the film after five years.
