Veteran director and screenwriter Toshio Masuda, widely celebrated for shaping the landmark science fiction anime franchise Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Space Battleship Yamato), passed away on August 26 due to natural causes at a Tokyo hospital. He was 98 years old. The Directors Guild of Japan confirmed the news, noting that a private funeral service was held by his immediate family.
Born in Kobe in 1927, Masuda began his career in cinema after studying Russian literature at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Joining Shintoho Studio in 1950, he trained under legendary Japanese filmmakers including Mikio Naruse and Umetsugu Inoue before making his directorial debut at Nikkatsu in 1958. During the 1960s, Masuda established himself as a prominent live-action director, eventually gaining international acclaim for co-directing the Japanese segments of the 1970 epic war film Tora! Tora! Tora! alongside Kinji Fukasaku.
A Defining Force in Sci-Fi Anime
Masuda stepped into the animation industry in 1974, providing supervision and original concept planning for the inaugural Uchuu Senkan Yamato television series and its 1978 sequel. He directed the record-breaking 1977 theatrical compilation film, before scripting and directing landmark features such as Saraba Uchuu Senkan Yamato: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, 1978) and Yamato yo Towa ni (Be Forever Yamato, 1980).
His extensive animation portfolio also includes directing Toei Animation's 1982 feature Future War 198X-nen, co-directing Odin: Koushi Hansen Starlight (1985), and supervising both Umi no Triton and the historical Sangokushi film trilogy. In recognition of his decades-long cultural impact, Masuda received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1993 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 1999.
