Epic Games and Square Enix have launched their collaboration bringing Kingdom Hearts into Fortnite. The crossover introduces Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Roxas to the battle royale title across consoles, accompanied by a dedicated launch trailer spotlighting their arrival on Nintendo platforms.
Each character arrives in the Fortnite Item Shop with distinct outfits, bespoke Back Bling, Pickaxes, and LEGO Fortnite variants. The thematic bundle expands the offering with the Keyblade Flourish emote, the Lil’ Gummi Ship emote, and lobby tracks including Yoko Shimomura’s iconic compositions “Dearly Beloved” and “The Other Promise.”
Keyblades on the Island
Beyond cosmetics, the update alters standard Battle Royale mechanics. Players can scavenge the mythic Kingdom Key, enabling rapid melee combos and the ability to call down lightning strikes on targets. Health and shield sustain received a thematic spin through Sea Salt Ice Cream items, while two gameplay Overrides reshape team fights:
- Recovery: Eliminating rivals causes them to drop regenerative healing orbs.
- Level Up: Instantly outfits every member of an active squad with a Mythic Kingdom Key.
Epic Games has scheduled dedicated Kingdom Hearts Power Hours on September 19, running from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET and 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET. During these windows, lobby matches force every combatant to drop into the arena armed with a Kingdom Key and Sea Salt Ice Cream.
Franchise Horizon
The crossover lands amid heightened franchise activity. Disney and Square Enix previously revealed an official animated series adapting the universe, developed with narrative supervision from series creator Tetsuya Nomura. Originally established in 2002, the cross-media property has shipped over 38 million units worldwide across multiple generations.
While Kingdom Hearts III wrapped up the overarching Dark Seeker Saga, attention remains fixed on Kingdom Hearts IV, which begins the Lost Master arc and is targeted for release in late 2027.
