Kyoko Hikawa’s seminal shojo isekai manga Kanata Kara (From Far Away) has officially made its transition to television animation. Premiering on October 5, 2026, the adaptation brings back the foundational fantasy epic that defined a generation of storytelling in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine following its initial 1991 run.
The narrative opens with ordinary high school student Noriko Tachiki—voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa—mysteriously whisked away from her normal morning routine into a breathtaking, emerald-green fantasy realm. Almost immediately, she is targeted by monstrous creatures known as 'Hakamushi' and rescued by a formidable swordsman named Izーク, portrayed by Kentaro Kumagai. Izark is hunting for the 'Awakening,' a cataclysmic force capable of rousing the terrifying monster 'Tenjouki' that opportunistic factions seek to weaponize for global domination.
Production Pedigree and Modern Adaptation Choices
Steering the production is veteran director Noriyuki Abe at Studio Deen, working alongside series composition writer Rika Takasugi and character designer Eiji Abiko. Music composition is handled by Takeshi Hamada. Unlike many contemporary isekai protagonists who miraculously understand native dialects, Hikawa's original premise kept language barrier realism front and center: Noriko initially cannot understand Izark, painstakingly learning the local tongue over time. The adaptation also subtly modernizes Noriko's initial equipment with a smartphone, seamlessly bridging the gap between its 1990s manga origins and a modern viewing audience.
The voice cast features an impressive lineup rounding out the core conflict, including Yuichiro Umehara as Rachef, Eiji Takeuchi as Camos Lee Gouda, Kimiko Saito as Gaya, Tadashi Miyazawa as Gorya, Taisuke Nakano as Agor, and Miku Ito as Gina Hearth. Opening theme duties are handled by Genjin wa Jibun ni Aru. with 'Toko-kou,' while Nanashino Taro performs the ending theme 'Hikari no Soba de.'
Broadcasts run across Tokyo MX, ABC TV, WOWOW, and AT-X, with streaming options available via platforms like U-NEXT, Abema, and TVer for international and domestic fans alike.
