Legendary anime and video game creator Jun Maeda, celebrated for his foundational work on visual novel masterpieces such as Clannad, Little Busters!, and Angel Beats!, has publicly announced his diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer. The official announcement was released by his agency, Visual Arts and Key, detailing his current medical status and the future trajectory of his ongoing creative endeavors.
According to the official statement, Maeda began experiencing discomfort in his throat earlier this spring. As symptoms intensified over the summer, medical evaluations at a hospital confirmed the diagnosis. Maeda is currently the lead scenario writer and composer for the mobile game Heaven Burns Red, and had been actively conceptualizing new musical projects. After careful consideration of his medical prognosis and treatment options, Maeda chose to forgo aggressive therapeutic interventions in favor of palliative care, prioritizing the conservation of his physical strength to dedicate his remaining energy entirely to writing and composing.
Creative Outlook and Final Projects
The announcement also clarified the status of Maeda's active projects. For Heaven Burns Red, the scenario writing for the first part of Chapter 6, as well as the core structural plot points leading to the conclusion of Chapter 6, has already been fully completed. Furthermore, the lyrics and compositions for the music featured in the first part of Chapter 6 are finalized. However, the statement noted that any scenario work or musical composition beyond these completed milestones may be impacted as his symptoms progress.
Regarding his planned long-term YouTube musical project, Maeda expressed that due to having limited time remaining, he has shifted his strategy to rapidly complete and release his currently envisioned tracks directly to the fans. Fulfilling his strong personal desire, these compositions will be published sequentially on YouTube.
The announcement concluded with a message of gratitude and an address for fan correspondence, noting that while personal replies are impossible, all letters and messages of encouragement will be delivered directly to Maeda. The agency expressed appreciation for the unwavering support of fans and industry colleagues during this difficult time, emphasizing Maeda's relentless dedication to storytelling up to his final moments.
