In a recent update shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, renowned manga creator Yoshihiro Togashi revealed that he will decline future external work requests with strict deadlines. Moving forward, the celebrated mangaka intends to focus entirely on his own manuscripts while managing ongoing physical and mental health hurdles.
This announcement follows a continuous cycle of intermittent serialization for Hunter x Hunter, which returned to the pages of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in late June before stepping back onto hiatus in September. Despite enduring severe chronic back pain and undergoing surgery, Togashi has remained fiercely dedicated to his craft, recently confirming progress up to chapter 428 in manuscript form. The dark fantasy epic, which officially surpassed 100 million copies in circulation earlier this year, remains one of the most influential serialized manga of the modern era.
A Legacy Defined by Resilience
Launched in 1998 within the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, Hunter x Hunter quickly established itself as a masterclass in subverting battle shonen tropes through intricate world-building, complex moral ambiguity, and masterclass tactical confrontations. Over the decades, Yoshihiro Togashi's sprawling narrative has inspired two acclaimed television anime adaptations, theatrical films, and numerous stage adaptations published internationally by Viz Media.
While the physical realities of chronic health issues have necessitated a departure from traditional weekly production models—prompting Shueisha to abandon standard serialization constraints for the title in late 2022—Togashi's unwavering commitment to his characters continues to command immense respect throughout the global industry and reader community.
