The culinary world of chef Anthony Bourdain is making its way to animation. Producers behind the upcoming Adult Swim adaptation of Get Jiro, the acclaimed DC Comics graphic novel created by the late culinary icon alongside Joel Rose and artist Langdon Foss, have opened up about bringing the brutal, food-obsessed dystopia to life.
Originally published under DC's Vertigo imprint, Get Jiro imagines a near-future Los Angeles governed entirely by militant, warring chefs. In this hyper-stylized culinary underworld, food is religion, and poor cooking habits or bad etiquette are punishable by immediate execution. At the center of the narrative is Jiro, a rebellious sushi chef who refuses to conform to the tyrannical culinary syndicates ruling the city.
Bringing Bourdain's uncompromising vision to the animation medium required striking a delicate balance between gourmet appreciation and visceral action choreography. The creative team noted that capturing the raw, unflinching energy of the original comic was paramount, ensuring that the elaborate food creations look just as appetizing as the martial arts clashes are brutal. With Adult Swim steering the project, fans of both the graphic novel and high-octane animation can expect a distinct visual identity when the series hits screens.
