The Japanese government has officially selected veteran anime director Rintaro, widely known for his visionary work on Galaxy Express 999 and Metropolis, as one of the 20 prestigious Persons of Cultural Merit for 2026. This high honor recognizes his monumental contributions to the development of Japanese television and cinematic animation, particularly his foundational early work alongside industry pioneer Osamu Tezuka.
Born Shigeyuki Hayashi and currently 85 years old, Rintaro has left an indelible mark on the medium. His career spans landmark productions including Astro Boy, Harmagedon, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and X/1999. Beyond his legacy as a director, he remains actively engaged in the creative sphere, having recently provided the original story draft for Toei Animation's upcoming theatrical anime film based on Leiji Matsumoto’s iconic Galaxy Express 999 franchise.
The director's creative output continues to receive international and domestic acclaim. His autobiographical manga, My Life in 24 Frames per Second, secured the Grand Prize at the 29th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize awards and earned a nomination for Best Graphic Memoir at the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. This cultural recognition places Rintaro alongside previous legendary honorees such as voice acting icon Masako Nozawa and manga creator Keiko Takemiya.
