Language fluency in anime often serves as a quick shorthand for intellect, a mysterious overseas upbringing, or high-stakes espionage. To celebrate TOEIC Day, the Japanese digital outlet Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey asking fans to vote for the anime characters they consider most exceptionally skilled in English. Running from October 5 to October 12, the poll captured 123 responses, leaning heavily toward younger demographics and a predominantly female readership.
The Brains Behind the Top Spots
Securing the crown at number one with roughly 29 percent of the vote is Ai Haibara from Detective Conan. Once known as Sherry within the shadowy Black Organization, her early scientific education abroad and linguistic prowess—extending even to Russian—made her a clear favorite among voters who praised her mastery of technical English and research papers.
