Naomi Osaka has been turning heads at Wimbledon for more than just her performance on the grass, stepping onto the court in a stunning custom white kimono rooted in her Japanese heritage. Beyond the immediate cultural tribute, the four-time Grand Slam champion revealed an unexpected pop culture influence behind the viral look, explaining that wearing the garment makes her feel like she has stepped straight out of Bleach.

Returning to the WTA Tour with impressive momentum, Osaka captured international attention ahead of her opening match by showcasing the elaborate attire. Speaking to the press after the match, she detailed the dual inspirations behind her wardrobe choice, pointing to both her multicultural background and cinematic touchstones like Lucy Liu's character in Kill Bill before naming Tite Kubo's landmark shonen property.

When asked further about the design origins by reporters, Osaka elaborated on her passion for the medium:

The kimono… we had to get it from Japan… there’s this anime called Bleach. It’s one of my favorites. I don’t want to bore you, but anyway, I feel like I’m channeling a character from that whenever I wear the kimono in that way.

As one of the defining titles of the modern manga and anime landscape, Bleach follows Ichigo Kurosaki and a supernatural caste of Soul Reapers tasked with cleansing Hollows. Fans quickly noted the striking resemblance between Osaka's flowing attire and the breathtaking aesthetic of Rukia Kuchiki during her pivotal Bankai transformation, which similarly features an immaculate white robe and commanding silhouette.

Osaka's tribute has not hampered her athletic ambitions either. The tennis star secured a major victory against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, advancing to her first career Wimbledon quarterfinal and proving that her love for otaku culture comfortably coexists with elite athletic dominance.
