Veteran anime director Yuuji Yanase passed away on August 22 at the age of 59 due to a myocardial infarction. Animation studio Maho Film, where Yanase had been a permanent staff member since 2023, announced his passing following a private funeral service held by close relatives.
A Core Creative Force
Yanase made his series directorial debut in 2017 with the hit light novel adaptation In Another World With My Smartphone (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni.). Over the following decade, he became an indispensable pillar of studio Maho Film, steering the production of numerous popular fantasy and slice-of-life adaptations.
The production committee behind the ongoing anime The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for The Throne (Saikyou Degarashi Ouji no Anyaku Teii Arasoi) released a statement mourning his sudden departure:
We are still unable to accept this sudden news and are filled with deep sadness. Director Yanase dedicated tremendous effort to the production of this anime. We offer our most sincere gratitude and heartfelt condolences.
