October 29 is celebrated as Glove Day in Japan, taking its name from a clever wordplay on the numbers ten (te) and twenty-nine (bukuro). To mark the approaching season of winter accessories, the editorial staff at Anime! Anime! has launched a brand-new reader survey celebrating characters defined by handwear.
Throughout Japanese animation and video games, gloves serve as much more than mere protection against the cold. They frequently function as narrative devices: cherished keepsakes from loved ones, catalysts for unlocking supernatural powers, or essential statements of character design. The dramatic unmasking or removal of a glove often marks a turning point in a battle or an unforgettable emotional beat.
